In this BLOG post I will teach you how to make this beaded corn craft and ways to extend your learning and play!
This corn craft is a CLASSIC. Teachers and creative families have been doing it forever and ever in the fall months and it is just as cute and crafty each and every time! When I was teaching kindergarten I would set it up as a center each November.
It only requires two materials (YAY!) and you may already have some of them at home. Do you need fall colors? NOPE. Use what you have!
It is also a relatively mess-free craft. A few beads may roll away but you won't have to bust out the glue or the tape to make this cute craft happen.
Activities like this can also be very calming!
Do you have a kids table at Thanksgiving? This is the PERFECT make and take to set-up. Kids get to make their craft, create away and then take it home to enjoy. I love to add letter beads in to the fun. They can write their names as a place holder, add what they are thankful for or write Happy Thanksgiving!
Not only is this craft fun for kids, but it is amazing for strengthening a TON of skills!
While they are creating and crafting away they are working on:
Strengthening their fine motor skills (small muscles in their fingers and hands)
Problem solving
Patience
Sharing
Manners
Following directions
Attending to tasks
Want to extend your learning? Suggest working on:
Identifying color names
Patterning
Sorting
Counting
Remember, beads are a choking hazard. Please always monitor those still exploring with their mouths.
If you do have an early learner and you want to try this, don't worry. Here are some ways to support them!
Start by making a bracelet, using only one pipe cleaner and a smaller amount of beads.
Tape one end of the pipe cleaner to the table. This will stop the beads from falling off and reduce frustration.
Reduce the number of beads that you are adding to each pipe cleaner!
Materials:
7 pipe cleaners
20 pony beads, per pipe cleaner
Sensory tray or bowl
Scissors (if you want to shorten the stems)
Step 1:Â Gather your materials: place your beads and pipe cleaners on a sensory tray or in a bowl.
Step 2:Â Put the pipe cleaners in a pile and twist the very end so that they all stick together.
Step 3: String 20 beads on each pipe cleaner, pushing them all the way to the bottom.
Step 4: When you are done stringing your beads, twist the strings upward and gather in your hand. Assure that the twisted part of the bottom goes inward so that it is not poking out!
Step 5: Twist the top of the pipe cleaners together, assuring that all of the beads are pushed toward the bottom. If you want to make the stems shorter, trim them now with scissors.
